Bowles, Jane

Bowles, Jane (1917–73), New York‐born author, resident abroad for long periods as a child with her family and as an adult after marriage (1938) to Paul Bowles. She created a reputation among the avant‐garde with Two Serious Ladies (1943), an experimental novel about two women, one rich and prosperous, the other sensuous and sinful, whose lives touch only twice. A play, In the Summer House (1954), and her stories, Plain Pleasures (1966), were issued together as her Collected Works (1966). Feminine Wiles (1976) collects stories and sketches, another play, and letters.

Bowles, Jane

Bowles, Jane, née Auer (1917–73), wife of P. Bowles, is chiefly remembered for her short novel, Two Serious Ladies (1943), an exotic, disjointed work about two contrasted lives. Her play, In the Summer House (perf. 1953) was praised by T. Williams as ‘elusive and gripping’. Her Collected Works were published in 1984: Everything is Nice (1989) adds some previously uncollected short fiction. The story of her obsessional and self-destructive life is told in A Little Original Sin (1981) by Millicent Dillon.
