Veth, Jan
Veth, Jan (b Dordrecht, 18 May 1864; d Amsterdam, 1 July 1925). Dutch painter, draughtsman, printmaker, poet, and writer on art, a leading figure in the Dutch art world of his time. His best-known book is his monograph on Rembrandt, originally published to mark the 300th anniversary of the painter's birth in 1606. As an artist he worked mainly as a portraitist (in drawing and lithography as well as painting). His sitters included many distinguished Dutch contemporaries, but he also portrayed people from humble walks of life.
