Jan Pynas

Pynas, Jan

Pynas, Jan (b Alkmaar, c.1582; bur. Amsterdam, 27 Dec. 1631) and Jacob (b Amsterdam, c.1592; d ?Delft, ?1650). Dutch painters, brothers. Jan visited Italy c.1605–7 (he was there at the same time as Lastman) and again about ten years later. On stylistic grounds it is likely that Jacob too went there at some time. Both brothers produced small-format history paintings in the manner of Elsheimer, and both of them usually signed their works ‘ J. Pynas’, causing difficulties in differentiating their hands. Rembrandt is said to have studied briefly with Jacob.
