Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu and Kashmir State in nw India, bounded n by Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, w by Pakistan and e by China. The capitals are Srinagar (summer) and Jammu (winter). The state is largely mountainous, and the Himalayas tower above the heavily populated valleys of the Indus and Jhelum rivers. Industries: rice cultivation, animal husbandry, silk factories, rice and flour mills, tourism. Area: 100,569sq km (38,845sq mi). Pop. (2001) 10,069,917.
