Moore, James
Moore, James (1737–77) Revolutionary war general, born in New Hanover County, North Carolina. Moore crushed the loyalist forces at Moore's Creek Bridge (1776) through skillful maneuvering of inexperienced militia. Considered the ablest military leader of North Carolina, Moore was given command of the Southern Department, but died suddenly shortly thereafter. Before the Revolution Moore had been a militia captain during the French and Indian War (1754–63), twice served in the North Carolina legislature, and been active in the Sons of Liberty.
