James Lenox

Lenox, James

Lenox, James (1800–1880), heir to one of New York's greatest fortunes, spent much of his mature life in philanthropy, including the creation of the Lenox Library for his great collection of incunabula, Bibles, English literature, and for other sources of scholarship, including his own historical and bibliographical studies. Samuel Allibone was his librarian, and the library itself has become part of the New York Public Library. Henry Stevens, the bookseller, wrote Recollections of Mr. James Lenox of New York and the Formation of His Library (1886).
