Waddell, James Iredell

Waddell, James Iredell (1824–1886) U.S. and Confederate naval officer. Born in Pittsboro, North Carolina, in 1824, James Iredell Waddell entered the U.S. Navy as a midshipman in 1841. He saw action off Veracruz during the Mexican War (1846–48) and then attended Annapolis, from which he was graduated in 1847. Upon his return from the Far East in 1862, he resigned his U.S. commission and joined the Confederate navy, serving on the Mississippi and on the Atlantic coast. In October 1864, he took command of the Confederate raider CSS Shenandoah in England, and sailed to the Pacific where he destroyed most of the Union whaling fleet. Following the Civil War, Waddell captained commercial vessels.

James Iredell Waddell

James Iredell Waddell , 1824–86, Confederate naval officer in the American Civil War, b. Pittsboro, N.C. He was appointed a midshipman in the U.S. navy in 1841. On return from duty in Asia in 1862, he resigned his commission as lieutenant and in March took the same rank in the Confederate navy. In 1864 he took command of the Shenandoah, one of the outstanding Confederate cruisers , which remained in action after the fall of the Confederacy; Waddell was not apprised of the Confederacy's fall until Aug., 1865. Later he was master of a passenger ship between San Francisco and Yokohama.
