James Eric Drummond Perth, 16th earl of 1876-1951, British diplomat. He was the first secretary-general of the League of Nations (1919-33) and ambassador to Rome (1933-39) and served (1939-40) as chief adviser on foreign publicity with the ministry of information. He succeeded to his earldom in 1937. From 1947 until his death he was deputy leader of the Liberal party.

Drummond, Sir James Eric (Earl of Perth) (b. 17 Aug. 1876, d. 15 Dec. 1951). First Secretary of the League of Nations 1919–33 The private secretary to Prime Minister Asquith (1912–15) and then to Foreign Secretaries Grey (1915–16) and Balfour (1916–18), he was part of the British delegation at the Paris Peace Conference (1918–19). Following his long tenure as first secretary of the League of Nations, during which time the organization was successful in mediating between belligerent nations but unable to prevent war, he was appointed British ambassador to Rome until the outbreak of World War II.
