Jairus

A Dictionary of the Bible | 1997 | | © A Dictionary of the Bible 1997, originally published by Oxford University Press 1997. (Hide copyright information) Copyright

Jairus The leader of a synagogue (Mark 5: 22) in Galilee (Capernaum?) who asked Jesus to heal his daughter. Jesus did more; he raised her from what onlookers took to be death. The account of this miracle is interrupted by the narrative of the healing of the woman suffering the embarrassment of continuous uterine bleeding, who had spent all her resources on medical treatment to no avail (Luke 8: 43). Both miracles have in common the gift of faith in Jesus and the explicit mention of ‘twelve’—the girl was 12 years old; the woman had suffered for twelve years. Readers of the gospels may have picked up the signals that the Lord of the Church, the New Israel, (old Israel comprised twelve tribes) offers the hope of their own future new risen life.
