Swanenburgh, Jacob van
Swanenburgh, Jacob van (b Leiden, 21 Apr. 1571; d Utrecht, 16 Oct. 1638). Dutch painter, a member of a family of artists active in Leiden. He was a minor figure, now remembered exclusively because he has the distinction of being the first recorded teacher of Rembrandt. His work had no discernible influence on his great pupil, for although Rembrandt's work was wide-ranging, he never—so far as is known—tried his hand at either of Swanenburgh's specialities: subjects set in Italy (where he spent most of his career, c.1591–1618) and scenes of hell.
