Conroy, Jack (John Wesley) (1899–1980), Missouri‐born editor of The Anvil (1933–37) and The New Anvil (1939–41), dedicated to the proletarian movement, as were his novels about laborers, The Disinherited (1933) and A World To Win (1935). With Arna Bontemps he wrote They Seek a City (1945), expanded as Anyplace But Here (1966), on migration of blacks. Writers in Revolt (1973) is an anthology from The Anvil. The Jack Conroy Reader (1980) is a collection of his writings.
