Jáchymov
Jáchymov , Ger. Joachimsthal, town, NW Czech Republic, in Bohemia, in the Erzgebirge [ore mountains]. The productivity of its uranium mines, once extensive, has declined since World War II. It is also a noted health resort, with thermal radioactive springs. Jáchymov was the main center of silver mining in Europe after the 16th cent., but its present output is negligible. The word Thaler, from which dollar is derived, is an abbreviation of Joachimsthaler, the name of a coin first struck there in the 16th cent. |

Jáchymov
Jáchymov, Czech Republic Joachimsthal The previous German name means ‘Joachim's Valley’, the present Czech name simply being ‘Joachim’. Founded in 1516 following the discovery of rich silver deposits, the town and the valley take their names from the mine which honoured St Joachim, father of the Virgin Mary. Silver from the mines led to a silver coin, the Joachimsthaler, being minted in 1519. This was later shortened to taler. The word ‘dollar’ is derived from taler.
