Jabneh

Jabneh

Jabneh (Yavneh, also known as Jamnia). Town to the east of Jerusalem. It came to prominence after the Fall of Jerusalem in 70 CE, when R. Johanan ben Zakkai was allowed by the Romans to establish a centre of learning—and, from the Jewish point of view, the Sanhedrin. From here the continuity of Judaism in Israel was secured.
