Ithaca, Greece, USA 1. Greece: one of the Ionian islands (Itháki in Greek) with a name of unknown meaning. However, the first syllable probably comes from the Phoenician word for ‘island’.2. USA (New York): founded in 1789 and named after the Greek island in 1795. It had previously been the centre of a township called Ulysses. According to the Odyssey, Homer's epic poem, Ulysses (in Greek, Odysseus) was the King of Ithaca'.
