Mbandaka
Mbandaka, Democratic Republic of the Congo Coquilhatville Developed as a colonial centre in 1886 and named ‘Coquilhat's Town’ after Camille‐Aimé Coquilhat (1853–92), the Belgian governor of the Congo Free State (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) (1891–2). It was renamed in 1966, possibly after a local chief who held sway before the Belgians arrived.

Mbandaka
Mbandaka , formerly Coquilhatville , city (1984 pop. 137,291), capital of Équateur province, W Congo (Kinshasa), a port on the Congo River. It is a commercial and transportation center and has tanning and fishing industries. |
