Iseult
Iseult, Isolda, Yseult, Ysolt, Es(s)syllt (Welsh). Name borne by two figures in the Arthurian romance of Tristan and Iseult. (1) Iseult (Isolt) of Ireland falls in love (sometimes from a potion) with Tristan of Cornwall, even though she has sworn vengeance against him for killing her father, while he escorts her to her betrothed, King Mark. After many intrigues she dies beside her mortally wounded lover. (2) Iseult (Ysonde) of Brittany, or of the White Hands, makes an unconsummated marriage with Tristan through the ruse of bearing his beloved's name. Jealously she lies to Tristan about the other Iseult's presence on the vessel he has awaited, and so causes him to die in grief before his beloved reaches him. Often compared to the Irish figures Deirdre and Gráinne. See Rachel Bromwich et al. (ed.), The Arthur of the Welsh (Cardiff, 1991), chs. 12 and 13.
