Irrawaddy

Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady), Burma A river and a division whose name is believed to come from the Sanskrit airāvati, the name of a sun god associated with the creation of the elephant; thus ‘elephant river’. It only adopts the name Irrawaddy after the confluence of the Nami Kha and Mali Kha, kha being the Kachin for ‘river’.

Irrawaddy

Irrawaddy (Irawadi) River in central Burma (Myanmar), formed by the union of the Mali and Nmai rivers. A vast delta extends 290km (180mi) from Henzada to the Andaman Sea. One of Asia's major rivers, it lies at the centre of an important rice-producing region. Length: c.2100km (1300mi).
