Irish (National) Volunteers
Irish (National) Volunteers, a militia founded 25 November 1913 at the Rotunda in Dublin, often seen as a direct response to an article by Eoin MacNeill in the Gaelic League paper Claidheamh Soluis. In this article nationalists were called upon to arm themselves in defence of home rule as the Ulster Volunteer Force had done to prevent home rule the year before. Although branches were set up throughout the country, the initial response was strongest in the north. A heavy IRB involvement in the foundation of the force made John Redmond, leader of the Nationalist Party, hesitant to support it. However, after he was allowed to nominate half the seats on the organizing provisional committee in June 1914, he gave his assent. Subsequently Volunteer membership rose to about 160,000.
With the start of the First World War the movement split when Redmond called upon all Irishmen to support the British war effort. Redmond's supporters broke away with the bulk of the Volunteers and formed the National Volunteers. The radical nationalists in the Irish Volunteers were left with only a skeleton organization of about 2,000–3,000 members. They slowly reorganized until they comprised about 15,000 men by 1916. Against the will of Eoin MacNeill, the chief of staff, an IRB‐led section of the organization had begun to plan an uprising, which became the rising of 1916. Joost Augusteijn |
