Irish Literary Theatre

Irish Literary Theatre

Irish Literary Theatre, founded by Lady Gregory and W. B. Yeats, the first manifestation in drama of the Irish literary revival. The first performances were of Yeats's The Countess Cathleen and Martyn's The Heather Field at the Antient Concert Rooms, Dublin, in 1899. In 1901 a cast headed by Frank Benson came from England to appear in Diarmuid and Grania, by Yeats and Moore, and the first Gaelic play, Douglas Hyde's Casadh an tSugáin, was performed by Gaelic-speaking amateurs. The Irish Literary Theatre was then taken over by the Irish National Dramatic Society.
