Innsbruck City in w Austria, on the River Inn, 135km (84mi) sw of Salzburg; capital of Tirol. Founded in the 12th century, the city grew rapidly because of its strategic position on a historic transalpine route. Innsbruck is a commercial and industrial centre, and an important winter sports resort. Industries: manufacturing, metalworking, textiles, Pop. (2001) 113,826.
