Indulf

Indulf (d. 962), king of ‘Scotland’ (954–62). His father was Constantine II and his mother was (probably) Danish, which would account for his Danish name. He succeeded Malcolm I, and extended the kingdom's territory south across the Firth of Forth to include Edinburgh. His reign witnessed a resurgence of Scandinavian incursions. A fleet of Vikings was defeated in Buchan, and Indulf himself perished in battle against a Norwegian force at ‘Invercullen’ (either Cullen, 55 miles north-west of Aberdeen, or Cowie, 15 miles south of Aberdeen). A 17th-cent. collection of annals records that he expelled Bishop Fothad of St Andrews (d. 963), but the circumstances are unknown.
