Robert Indiana

Robert Indiana , 1928–, American artist, b. New Castle, Ind., as Robert Clarke. A leading figure in the pop art movement of the 1960s, he has specialized in making signs in various media, inspired by billboards and posters in the American landscape. His best known image, LOVE, first created (1964) for a Christmas card printed by New York's Museum of Modern Art, has been the subject of many of his paintings, sculptures, and prints, and has appeared as a U.S. postage stamp and in untold numbers of posters, reproductions, and commercial adaptations.

Indiana, Robert

Indiana, Robert (b New Castle, Ind., 13 Sept. 1928). American painter, sculptor, and graphic artist. His original name was Robert Clark, but he adopted the name of his native state as his own. He is regarded as one of the leading American Pop artists, and although he has done some figurative paintings he is best known for pictures involving geometric shapes emblazoned with lettering and signs. His vivid colours often create effects of visual ambiguity reminiscent of those of Op art.
