Immanuel or Emmanuel (Heb., ‘God is with us’). The name of a son prophesied to be born of a young woman (or virgin) in Isaiah 7. 14. Christian tradition, starting with Matthew 1. 23, has interpreted the passage as a prophecy of the virgin birth of Christ.

Immanuel or Emmanuel (Heb., ‘With us [is] God’). The word occurs in Is. 7:14 and 8:8, but it is not clear to whom it refers. In Mt. 1:23 the prophecy is interpreted with reference to the birth of Christ.
