Illyria
Illyria Only the Albanians claim descent from the Illyrian tribes whose territories stretched along the Adriatic coast from Slovenia in the north to Epirus in modern Greece. After defeat by the Romans in 168 bc, much of Illyria became the Roman province of Illyricum. There is no certainty as to the origin of the name. It may come from the Albanian iliret, the root i lir meaning ‘free’; thus iliret corresponds to ‘freemen’ and Illyria to ‘Land of the Free’.
