Hywel Dda, ap Cadell
Hywel Dda, ap Cadell [W hywell, eminent, prominent; dda, good]. Historical (d. 950) Welsh king, grandson of Rhodri Mawr, famed for establishing a native system of laws, counterparts of the Irish Brehon Laws. The laws survive in seventy manuscripts, most dating from before the 16th century, when they were still in practice. Hywel appears to have been the only Welsh king to strike coins bearing his own image.
