Hsüeh-feng I-ts'un

Hsüeh-feng I-ts'un (822–908). A prominent Ch'an master of the T'ang dynasty period, who was a student of the illustrious master Te-shan Hsüan-chien (782–865). His Dharma-lineage was later to include both Yün-men Wen-yen (864–949), who established the Yün-men House of Ch'an, and Fa-yen Wen-i (885–958), who founded the Fa-yen House (See Five Houses). His name derives from the temple he himself established on Elephant Bone Mountain in Fu-chou, where the snows came early each year, giving it the name ‘Snowy Peak’ (Chin., hsüeh feng). Beginning as a simple thatched hermitage in 870, under his charismatic leadership it eventually evolved into a large temple, and Hsüeh-feng is said to have accumulated over 1,500 lay and monastic disciples.

Hsüeh-feng I-tsʾun

Hsüeh-feng I-tsʾun (Jap., Seppō Gison. 822–908). Chʾan/Zen Buddhist master, dharma-successor (hassu) of Te-shan Hsüan-chien, from whom derived (via his pupils) the Yünmen (Ummon) school and the Fa-yen/Hsüan-sha (Hogen) school. He experienced profound enlightenment in mondō with his dharma brother, Yen-t'ou Chuan-huo. Against his initial wishes, many monks gathered around him on Mount Hsüeh-feng (hence his name), and through them, Ch'an spread extensively.
