Hounslow

Hounslow , outer borough (1991 pop. 194,100) of Greater London, SE England, on the Thames River. Hounslow's manufactures include razor blades, soap, tires, biscuits, precision instruments, pharmaceuticals, and heating equipment. The town of Feltham has grown rapidly in the latter half of the 20th cent. due to its connection to Heathrow Airport. In 1016, Edmund Ironside defeated the Danes at Brentford. The Hounslow district of Heston and Isleworth was the site of the first stop on an important coach route to Southampton and Bath . The former Hounslow Heath, the location of a Roman camp, was a refuge for highwaymen; the area has become a military installation. The artist William Hogarth is buried in Chiswick, and his house is a tourist attraction.
