Distinguishing affixes are Latin magna ‘great’ and parva ‘little’. Houghton le Side Darltn. Hoctona 1200, Houghton-in-the-Syde c.1583. Affix means ‘by the hill slope’, from ME side. However the following have a different origin, ‘farmstead in a nook of land’, OE halh + tūn: Houghton, Great Barns. Haltun 1086 (DB), Magna Halghton 1303. Affix is Latin magna ‘great’. Houghton, Little Barns. Haltone 1086 (DB), Parva Halghton 1303. Affix is Latin parva ‘little’.
