Hoshea . 1 See Joshua . 2 Died after 722 BC, last king of Israel (c.730-722 BC). He succeeded Pekah, whom he murdered. He was a tributary of Assyria but made the fatal mistake of aligning himself with Egypt against his Assyrian overlord, who overran (c.728 BC) Israel and, after a long siege, took (722 BC) Samaria. This was the end of the northern kingdom. 2 Kings 15.30; 17. 3 Hebrew name for the prophet Hosea .

Hoshea The best-known person of this name in the OT is the last king of Israel, who was defeated by the assyrians in 724 BCE after appealing in vain for help from Egypt (2 Kgs. 17: 4).
