Horton 1158. Horton Green Ches. Horton c.1240. Horton-in-Ribblesdale N. Yorks. Hortune 1086 (DB), Horton in Ribbelesdale 13th cent. Affix means ‘valley of the River Ribble’, OE river-name (see Ribbleton) + OE dæl or OScand. dalr. Horton Kirby Kent. Hortune 1086 (DB), Horton Kyrkeby 1346. Manorial affix from its possession by the de Kirkeby family in the 13th cent.

However the following has a different origin: Horton S. Glos. Horedone 1086 (DB). ‘Hill frequented by harts or stags’. OE heorot + dūn.
