Bucerotidae (hornbills; class Aves, order Coraciiformes) A family of medium to large, typically black and white birds that have huge, curved, red or yellow bills, a casque on the culmen, short legs, and a long tail. Some of the 15 species of Tockus, found in Africa and southern Asia, have black bills. Hornbills are arboreal and terrestrial. They nest in holes in trees, the females being walled in with mud. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruit and insects. There are 12 genera, with 46–9 species, found in Africa, southern Asia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Solomons.
