Horace Howard Furness

Horace Howard Furness , 1833-1912, American Shakespearean scholar, b. Philadelphia; son of William Henry Furness. He was the editor of the New Variorum edition of Shakespeare (plays published separately, 1871-1913). His son, Horace Howard Furness, Jr., 1865-1930, succeeded him as editor and donated his father's Shakespearean library to the Univ. of Pennsylvania.

Furness, Horace Howard (1833–1912), ranked as one of the most important Shakespeare scholars of the U.S. because of the New Variorum edition that he began in 1871, and which was continued (1908–28) by his son and namesake and later by others.

Furness, Horace Howard (1833–1912), scholar. Born in Philadelphia, the son of a Unitarian minister, he attended Harvard and was admitted to the bar but devoted most of his life to the study of Shakespeare and the preparation of various editions of his works. Beginning with Romeo and Juliet, he edited fifteen plays, while his wife, Helen Kate Furness, compiled A Concordance to the Poems of Shakespeare. After his death, his son, Horace Jr. and other scholars attended to editions of the remaining plays.
