Holy Office

Holy Office. The Roman Congregation established in connection with the Inquisition in 1542 to deal with heresy internationally. In 1965 it became the ‘Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’ and was charged with the positive function of promoting as well as safeguarding sound doctrine. Since 1988 its title has been the ‘Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith’.

Holy Office

Holy Office. The Roman congregation established in connection with the Inquisition by Pope Paul III in 1542 as the final court of appeal in trials of heresy. In 1965 Paul VI reformed it and changed its name to ‘The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’.
