Hillsborough, Canada, UK, USA 1. UK (Northern Ireland): the Irish name is Cromghlinn. Hillsborough means ‘Hill's Fortified Manor’ from burh; ‘Hill’ referred to Colonel Arthur Hill (c.1601–63), constable and MP for the counties of Down, Antrim, and Armagh. He was granted land here upon which he built a fortress called Hillsborough Fort.2. USA (North Carolina): laid out in 1754 on the site of a Native American village, it was at first called Orange and then Corbinton after a colonial official, Francis Corbin. In 1759 it became Childsburgh after Thomas Childs, a provincial attorney general. Finally, in 1768, it was renamed Hillsboro after Wills Hill (see Hillsboro). The spelling was changed in 1965.

Hillsborough a football stadium in Sheffield, England, home of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, which was the scene of Britain's worst sports disaster when, on 15 April 1989, 95 Liverpool fans died in a crush at an FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Hillsborough Down. ‘Hill's fortified mansion’. Sir Moses Hill, Provost Marshal of Ulster, built a fortress here in c.1610. The Irish name of Hillsborough is Cromghlinn, as for Crumlin.
