Highland Land League
Highland Land League. Scottish crofters in the 1870s watched the success of the Irish in obtaining concessions, had ‘a mind to turn rebels themselves’, and concluded that the Irish Land League might be copied. The Highland Land League was formed in 1882 and returned four sympathetic MPs at the election of 1885. Results were gratifyingly swift. Gladstone's Crofters' Act of 1886 gave security of tenure and Salisbury, the same year, established a separate secretary of state for Scotland. These concessions dampened the agitation, though the Highland Land League stayed in existence, becoming the Scottish National League in 1921 and eventually merging with the Scottish National Party.
