Herzog

Herzog & De Meuron. Swiss architects. Jacques Herzog (1950– ) and Pierre De Meuron (1950– ) formed their partnership in 1978, later joined (1991) by Harry Gugger (1956– ) and (1994) by Christine Binswanger (1964– ). Among their works are the Goetz Gallery, Munich (1992), the Chocolate and Caramel Factory, Mulhouse, France (1993), and the Signal-Box, Basel Hauptbahnhof, Switzerland (1995). In 1995 they won the architectural competition to design the Tate Gallery of Modern Art inside Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's redundant Bankside Power Station, London: the building (1995–9) has proved very popular. Following this success, they designed the Rudin House, Leymen, Ht.-Rhin, France (1996–7), the Caricature and Cartoon Museum, Basel (1994–6), the Studio Rémy Zaugg, Mulhouse-Pfastatt, France (1995–6), the Dominus Winery, Yountville, CA, USA (1995–8), the Küppersmühle Art Museum, Duisburg, Germany (1996–9), the Hypo-Bank, Theatinerstrasse, Munich (1996–2002), the Kunsthaus, Arrau, Switzerland (1997–2001), the Laban Dance Centre, London (1997–2002—which won an RIBA Award (2003) ), the Miuccia Fashion Store, Tokyo, Japan (2002–3), and the Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany (2003–5). Their work has won many plaudits on both sides of the Atlantic.

Herzog

Herzog, novel by Saul Bellow, published in 1964.

Moses Herzog, a professor of history in New York City, undergoes a crisis when his wife Madeline divorces him. To find surcease he goes to Martha's Vineyard and occupies himself composing letters in his mind and on paper, addressed to friends and public figures, living and dead, on issues that plague him. Told that Madeline and her lover, Valentine Gersbach, once Herzog's best friend, are neglecting his daughter June, he rushes to Chicago to get custody of the girl and even plans to murder his former wife and onetime friend. Serio‐comic misadventures frustrate his plans, and he goes back to Massachusetts “pretty well satisfied to be, to be just as it is willed …” with “no messages for anyone.”
