Obrist, Hermann
Obrist, Hermann (1862–1927). Swiss Arts-and-Crafts designer influential in art and architecture before the 1914–18 war. He was the major figure in the establishment of the Vereinigte Werkstätten (United Workshops) in Munich (1895), and his designs helped to promote Art Nouveau. He was a particular influence on Behrens and Endell. He published Neue Möglichkeiten in der bildenden Kunst (New Possibilities in the Graphic Arts—1903) and several significant contributions to the journals Dekorative Kunst (Decorative Art). His designs for tombs and monuments from c.1900 were early examples of Expressionism.
