Slocum, Henry Warner (1826–94) Union army officer, born in New York. When the Civil War began, he received a commission as a colonel in the Twenty-seventh New York Infantry. He fought at the First Battle of Bull Run (1861); in 1862 he commanded a division of the Army of the Potomac during the Peninsular campaign. He was promoted to major general of volunteers and then to commander and fought at the Second Battle of Bull Run (1862) and at Antietam (1862). He commanded the District of Vicksburg so effectively that Gen. Ulysses S. Grant blocked an effort to transfer him out. In 1863 Slocum led the first troops to enter Atlanta with Gen. William T. Sherman's army, and he commanded the left wing of Sherman's army during Sherman's March to the Sea. Slocum briefly commanded the Department of Mississippi after the war but resigned and returned to New York.
