Henry Mitchell MacCracken 1840-1918, American educator, b. Oxford, Ohio, grad. Miami Univ. (Ohio), 1857. After a brief teaching career MacCracken entered the Presbyterian ministry in 1863. From 1881 to 1884 he was chancellor of Western Univ. (now the Univ. of Pittsburgh). In 1884 he was appointed professor of philosophy and vice chancellor of the Univ. of the City of New York (now New York Univ.), becoming chancellor in 1891.
