Henry Harland 1861-1905, American novelist, b. St. Petersburg, Russia, studied at Harvard. He traveled extensively in Europe during his childhood. His first novels were written under the pseudonym Sidney Luska and dealt with immigrant Jewish life in the United States. He later abandoned this type of writing and in 1889 left the United States to live in London. There he became one of the leading exponents of fin de siècle aestheticism and with Aubrey Beardsley founded (1894) the Yellow Book . During the three years of the Yellow Book's publication, Harland was its literary editor and contributed many stories to it. His later novels, including The Cardinal's Snuff Box (1900) and The Lady Paramount (1902), were noted for their wit and highly polished prose style.

Harland, Henry (1861–1905), born in New York City and educated at its City College (1877–80), liked to pose as Russian‐born, European‐schooled, and a Harvard student. Under the name Sidney Luska he wrote some sensational novels dealing with the lives of immigrant Jews, including As It Was Written: A Jewish Musician's Story (1885), Mrs. Peixada (1886), The Yoke of the Thorah (1887), and My Uncle Florimond (1888). In 1889 he moved to Paris, cultivating new themes and using his own name for the collection of stories and four novels that he published within two years, respectively A Latin‐Quarter Courtship (1889), Grandison Mather (1889), Two Women or One (1890), Two Voices (1890), and Mea Culpa (1891). He took up residence in London in 1890 and became one of the leading expatriate aesthetes, and the original editor of The Yellow Book (1894–97), a very influential fin de siècle literary and artistic journal. During this later period he wrote a number of courtly and decorative tales, collected in Mademoiselle Miss (1893), Grey Roses (1895), and Comedies and Errors (1898), as well as the extremely popular The Cardinal's Snuff‐Box (1900), concerned with the love of an English novelist and an Italian duchess, which comes to a happy fulfillment through the mediation of his uncle, the cardinal. My Friend Prospero (1904) is a similar romance about a young English nobleman and an Austrian princess.
