Condell, Henry
Condell, Henry (?–1627), Elizabethan actor, first mentioned in 1598 as playing in Jonson's Every Man in His Humour. His only other known role is the Cardinal in Webster's The Duchess of Malfi (1614), but he is believed to have appeared in Shakespeare's plays in such supporting roles as Horatio in Hamlet. Evidently a well-known and respected figure in Jacobean theatre society, and one of the sharers in both the Globe and Blackfriars, he left the stage to devote himself to business matters in about 1616. With his fellow actor Heminge he was jointly responsible for the collecting and printing in one volume—the so-called First Folio—of Shakespeare's plays, published in 1623, price 20 shillings. Although there is no record of how many copies were printed, a second edition was not called for until 1636.
