Henry Benbridge

Henry Benbridge 1744-1812, American portrait painter and miniaturist, b. Philadelphia, studied in Italy and with Benjamin West in London. His portraits are characterized by technical skill and have sometimes been attributed to John Singleton Copley . Among his works are portraits of Mrs. Simons (Metropolitan Mus.) and Benjamin Franklin (Carnegie Inst., Pittsburgh). He lived in Charleston, S.C., for many years.
