Hempstead, usually ‘the homestead’, OE hām-stede, hǣm-stede: Hempstead Essex. Hamesteda 1086 (DB). Hempstead Norfolk, near Lessingham. Hemsteda 1086 (DB). Hempstead, Hemel Herts. Hamelamestede 1086 (DB). Hemel is an old district-name first recorded c.705 meaning ‘broken, undulating’ from OE *hamel.
However the following has a different origin: Hempstead Norfolk, near Holt. Henepsteda 1086 (DB). ‘Place where hemp is grown’. OE hænep + stede. |
