Helene Schjerfbeck

Schjerfbeck, Helene

Schjerfbeck, Helene (1862–1946). Finnish painter, born in Helsinki, where she began her training at the Finnish Fine Art Association's Drawing School as a precious 11-year-old. In the 1880s she travelled widely, working mainly in France but also in St Ives (see ST IVES SCHOOL) and St Petersburg, making a name with open-air scenes notable for their fresh colouring. From about 1900 her health (always delicate) began to fail badly (although she lived into her 80s) and she adopted a solitary life at Hyvinkää, developing a much more simplified style in which the subtle colour harmonies recall those of Whistler. For several years she was more or less forgotten in Helsinki, but in 1917 she had a one-woman show there, organized by Gösta Stenman, an art dealer and journalist, and after this she was recognized as one of the pioneers of modernism in Finland. John Boulton-Smith (Modern Finnish Painting and Graphic Art, 1970) describes her as ‘a genuine, small, highly civilized master’ and writes that ‘no painter in Scandinavia made a more intelligent and original contribution to the early modern movement, save only Munch'. Her work included landscapes, still-lifes, figure compositions, and portraits, notably a long series of self-portraits that are regarded being among her finest achievements.
