Hebrides
Hebrides, Scotland/UK Ebudes/Hebudes, Suδreyjar A group of islands subdivided into the Inner Hebrides and the Outer Hebrides. The origins of the name are not known, but the present name is said to come from a misreading of u for ri. The Old Scandinavian name, Suδreyjar, meant ‘Southern Islands’, a reference to the fact that they were well to the south of Orkney. They became part of the Norwegian realm before being passed to Scotland in 1266.
