Haverfordwest , Welsh Hwlffordd, town (1981 pop. 9,936), Pembrokeshire, SW Wales, on the Western Cleddau River. It is a market town. A notable 13th-century church stands there.

Haverfordwest (Hwlffordd) Pemb. Haverfordia 1191, Hareford 1283, Heverford West 1448, Herefordwest 1471. ‘Western ford used by goats’. OE hæfer + ford + west. West was added to distinguish the town from Hereford, Herefs. The Welsh name has developed from the original English.
