Harold Town

Town, Harold

Town, Harold (1924–1990). Canadian abstract painter, printmaker, and sculptor, born in Toronto, where he spent most of his life. He studied there at Ontario College of Art, 1942–5, and in 1953–9 was a member of Painters Eleven. This was a channel for the influence of Abstract Expressionism in Canada, but he subsequently worked in a variety of abstract styles, often developing themes in long series over a number of years His work included murals for several public buildings, for example Toronto International Airport (1962). In 1956 and 1964 he represented Canada at the Venice Biennale.

Town, Harold

Town, Harold (b Toronto, 13 June 1924; d Peterborough, Ontario, 27 Dec. 1990). Canadian abstract painter, printmaker, and sculptor, active mainly in Toronto, where he was a leading member of the group Painters Eleven (1953–60). This was a channel for the influence of Abstract Expressionism in Canada, but he subsequently worked in a variety of abstract styles, often developing themes in long series over a number of years. His work included murals for several public buildings, for example Toronto International Airport (1962). In 1956 and 1964 he represented Canada at the Venice Biennale.
