Hardwar

Hardwār

Hardwār, Uttar Pradesh/India Kapila Also spelt Haridwar. It was originally named after the sage Gupila. The present name is derived from Haridvāra and means the ‘Door, or Gate, of Hari’, Hari being one of the names of Vishnu, one of the major Hindu deities. Thus, the name can be taken to mean ‘Gateway to the Gods’. The town is one of the most important pilgrimage centres of Hinduism and is one of the four locations for the Kumbh Mela (see Allahābād).
