Makart, Hans
Makart, Hans (1840–84). Austrian painter. He studied under Piloty in Munich and from 1869 worked in Vienna, where he was enormously successful and became a leading society figure. His pictures, often vast in size, were characteristically of mythological, historical, and allegorical subjects, treated in the manner of grand opera or Hollywood epics in an exuberant, somewhat Rubensian style. They were produced in a huge studio that was one of the sights of Vienna (Makart liked to paint in front of visitors). His decorative commissions included murals in the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Makart's work had great influence in Austria and Germany, notably on the early work of Klimt, but his reputation soon declined after his death.

Hans Makart
Hans Makart , 1840–84, Austrian history painter, studied with Karl von Piloty . His early success was phenomenal. The emperor of Austria provided him with a studio, and his short life was crowded with official honors and triumphs. In his large history paintings he strove to emulate Titian and Veronese in the use of lush color. Characteristic of his glittering costume pieces is Entry of Charles V into Antwerp (1878, Hamburg). |
