Hananiah Of several persons with this name in the OT, the best known is the ‘false prophet’ who was denounced by Jeremiah (28: 5–9) for predicting the end within two years of the Babylonian exile. On the Deuteronomic principle (Deut. 18: 22) that a prophet's integrity was validated if his predictions came true, Hananiah's inspiration was regarded by Jeremiah as likely to be falsified; his audacity was punished: he was dead within a year.
